INTRODUCTION:
A FATHER’S PAIN

As Dr. Edward Stein sat in the audience and heard the introduction to his Nobel Laureate prize, he was not totally happy, though his life’s work was being celebrated. He worried about his son Frank, who he had not spoken to in over a year. And he thought.."What good is all of this fame and glory, if my own son hates me". The applauds begin and Dr. Stein walks to the podium to accept his award

While sipping a martini on the flight home Edward thought about his son and how the gap between them started....from the time he was a small boy. Frank was a wild child, undisciplined, could never sit still, and the harder he tried to discipline his son, the more he fought back. Young Frank had no interest in science or studying and to his father’s great disappointment was much more like his mother.

Dora, his wife, tried to mend the gap, but Edward was insistent that his son Frank was going to grow up without discipline, respect for authority and learning. There was constant war between father and young son.

In desperation Edward enrolled his son at Deerborn Academy when he was twelve years old. In his first week Frank set fire to his room and was on his way back home. Then the years of silence began, and his mother Dora, soon suffered a stroke and became an invalid. The Stein home was a place of great gloom, with Edward spending more and more time away from home in his lab, while nurses tended to his wife, and his son, just drifted, and drifted....into.....

Frank discovered the synthesizer when he was fourteen and soon dedicated himself to mastering it...but he was not content to just learn how to play it....he became fascinated with the circuitry that could create artificial music...

Not caring about school, Edward dedicated his entire existence to his music and now went by the name SCALD. Soon he organized some of his friends who shared his passion and started a band and named it SCALD. When not practicing he and his friends just listened to the music of the masters of rock and roll. Soon his band started to get a reputation as having the sound and fury that was unique...when Scald played his custom synthesizer, the audience went into a wild frenzy.

Soon SCALD was on the road traveling from town to town paying their dues in bars, and clubs, and life was good because the band had faith...they knew they were going to make it...they had a dream....and it was the dream that millions of young musicians share....it is the American dream...great drugs, sex with super models, fame, money, and an MTV video. What’s wrong with that?

While working in his lab one stormy night Dr. Stein gets a call that his son’s van went off the road, hit a tree....and his son is in intensive care...and in a coma.

Sitting by the side of his son’s bed, Dr. Stein is racked with grief....."How can I tell Dora that Frank is in a coma?". Exhausted he falls asleep in his chair and has a dream......

Edward tip toes into his son’s nursery...he is only six months old and he places a music system by the crib and pops a cassette labeled "Mozart" into the machine and pushes the Play button, and the music begins...and little Frank wakes up, and looks up at his father and starts smiling and kicking his feet and Edward picks up his son and dances with him around the room to Mozart’s music.....and as he looks at his infant son smiling face, his son speaks to him....."please dad, just give me one last chance.."

Edward wakes with a start and realizes that his dream was really remembering what actually happened many years ago...one of the happiest moments of his life...and then a loud beeping sound blares from the medical equipment monitoring Frank and doctors and nurses run into the room.

"I am sorry, there was nothing we could do...the brain damage was too severe"...and with these words from the doctor Edward collapses into uncontrollable tears and grief.

After sitting by the body of his son for hours in grief, Edward walks to the nurse’s desk and says..." I want to make arrangements to have my son’s body shipped to this address, and hands a card to the nurse that says, NATIONAL CRYOGENICS.
